Groundhog Day is Coming!

With February fast approaching we thought it would be a great time to spend this week learning all about Groundhog's Day. Today we read "It's Groundhog Day", a story about an eager groundhog who is preparing for his long winter nap. We learned what the legend suggests if a groundhog were to see his shadow on February 2nd. We even took a vote on who wanted 6 more weeks of winter and who was hoping spring would come early. The class was pretty divided as we are still waiting on some much needed snow days before we give up on winter ;).

After we read "It's Groundhog Day" we made our own groundhogs and attached his shadow. Check back later in the week to see what else we have planned for Groundhog Day!

Sorting & Graphing Hearts

One of our favorite activities today was sorting and graphing Conversation Hearts. This activity allowed us to sort the hearts by color and determine which had the least, and which had the most. We were able to graph our groups and use our beginning graphing skills to determine how many of each color heart we had! We even counted all of our hearts to see who had the most, and who had the least.

Interested in the template used for sorting and graphing? Scroll to the bottom of the blog and look under "resource pages".

Recycled Snowmen!

Today we continued working on "big, bigger, biggest", "small, medium, large", and size comparisons by making our own recycled snowmen! We stuffed each snowman with pages from magazines and used worksheets found in the school's paper recycle bin. The best part was having permission to rip pages out of magazines (which we were reminded not to do at home :)!)

Puffy Snowmen

We feel it's about time for some snow around here! In hopes of snow we made our own puffy snowmen today. We mixed equal parts glue and shaving cream to make these adorable men. We worked on circles, variant sizes ("small, medium, large", "big, bigger, biggest"), multi-step directions, and fine motor.

Germs!!

Although we have been working on sharing with our friends, today was all about keeping it to ourselves; germs that is! We read a fun story about a reluctant germ who did not want to make a young girl sick. Along with the story we talked about the different ways we could keep our germs to ourselves, including 'Batman Sneezes' and 'Dracula Coughs'. As well as the importance of using a tissue and washing our hands. Then, as always, we had a little fun with it and made the fun Germ Portraits below. Enjoy!
